Izzo: Allen will not play for Spartans next season

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

08/04/2010 - East Lansing, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chris Allen will not be in a Michigan State uniform for his senior season after failing to meet guidelines placed on him by head coach Tom Izzo.

Allen started 27 of the 36 games he played in as a junior during the 2009-10 campaign and was the Spartans' top three-point threat, hitting 39.8 percent from long range en route to averaging 8.2 points per game.

"It's been no secret that Chris Allen's been in a tenuous position since the spring," Izzo said in a statement. "There were multiple obligations that Chris had to meet in order to return for his senior season. While he did make progress through the summer, he has failed to meet all the obligations and will not be a part of our program this fall."

Izzo also stated the 6-foot-3, 205-pound guard "deserves another chance to play basketball somewhere, but it's in everyone's interest that it be somewhere other than Michigan State."

Allen has one year of eligibility remaining.

"Coach [Izzo] was straight-forward with me about what I needed to do to remain a part of the team. Unfortunately, I didn't meet all the obligations," Allen admitted. "I have enjoyed my time at Michigan State and I appreciate all the support from my fans, and everyone associated with the program. It's unfortunate things didn't work out, but I'm leaving on good terms with my teammates and coaches."

Michigan State advanced to the Sweet 16 in each of Allen's three seasons with the program, including a loss to North Carolina in the 2009 title game and a loss to Butler in the Final Four last season.
